The Founders Who Left Tesla to Rebuild America | a16z

New

Turner Caldwell of Mariana Minerals and Drew Baglino of Heron Power argue that America’s AI and industrial future depends on physical infrastructure: critical minerals, refining, energy, power electronics, manufacturing, and grid modernization. Mariana Minerals is building a software-first mining and refining company, using AI, reinforcement learning, and operating systems to accelerate project delivery and autonomous mine and refinery operations. Heron Power is developing solid-state transformers that replace traditional steel, oil, and copper-heavy grid equipment with silicon and software. Both founders, formerly of Tesla, say the Tesla model taught them techno-optimism, speed, risk tolerance, strong mission, and persistence through hard technical problems. They warn that the U.S. is decades behind China in critical minerals and still relies on outdated grid systems and fragmented supply chains. To rebuild, they call for durable industrial policy, faster permitting, co-located supply chains, private capital incentives, advanced manufacturing talent, and national-scale grid planning.

Inside NASA's Plan to Return to The Moon, Reach Mars, and Go Nuclear | The a16z Show

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman explains why America needs to move faster on returning to the moon. He says NASA must stop moving at a “years-long” pace, rebuild key in-house skills, work smarter with private space companies, and make Artemis more realistic with extra test missions before landing astronauts. The big focus is building a long-term moon base, using the moon as a testing ground for Mars, and staying ahead in the new space race. He also talks about nuclear power, NASA’s budget, private industry, and the search for life beyond Earth.

AI Agents, Enterprise Workflows, and The Future of SaaS | Aaron Levie on a16z

This episode explores why AI agents are harder to deploy in enterprises than in startups. The speakers discuss integration limits, legacy systems, access control, headless SaaS, human-in-the-loop workflows, and why AI may reshape jobs rather than simply replace them.

The Era of AI Agents | Aaron Levie on The a16z Show

In this episode, the conversation explores what it really means to build software and companies in an AI-native world. Rather than treating AI as a simple replacement for existing tools, the discussion looks at the deeper shift happening underneath: how agents may change software interfaces, reshape workflows, pressure companies to expose better systems and APIs, and create entirely new economic models around computation, usage, and automation. At the same time, the speakers argue that AI adoption will likely be far slower and messier inside large enterprises than many people in Silicon Valley expect, because real-world organizations still have to deal with legacy systems, security, permissions, and operational risk. Overall, the episode is a thoughtful debate about where AI agents will truly create leverage, what kinds of businesses may benefit first, and why the biggest opportunities may come not from replacing old systems overnight, but from gradually rebuilding how software, work, and digital infrastructure operate.
